Create email accounts in cPanel

You can easily create email accounts from your web hosting control panel - cPanel. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Open your web browser, enter the cPanel URL and hit enter
  2. When it prompts for username and password, supply both and login
  3. From the list of icons, click on Email Accounts:

cPanel

  1. Enter the desired email username and the password. [Note: It is recommended to use the Password Generator to create tough to guess passwords.]
  2. If required, change the Mailbox Quota. You can select Unlimited option, if you do not want to restrict the amount of mails that can be received in your e-mail account. However, the total size of mail is limited to the total space allocated to your hosting account.
  3. Click the Create Account button and you are done.
  4. If you want to edit the e-mail account, scroll down the page, it will list all the e-mail accounts that have already been created. Against each e-mail account, you have links for Change Password, Change Quota, Delete, etc. Click on the appropriate link to make your changes.
  5. After you have finished, click on Logout to log out of the cPanel control panel.

Note:

  • Give a strong password for your email accounts.
  • After you create email accounts in cPanel, you should ideally configure Outlook Express or configure MS Outlook 2007 or configure MS Outlook 2003 to send and receive emails.
  • When you create email accounts with cPanel, you are creating the email accounts on your hosting / mail server. Hence, the hosting server will receive all the incoming mails to your account and store it in your account. If you have configured your Outlook Express or MS Outlook, and when you connect to receive mails, the emails are first downloaded to your computer and then deleted from the mail server. This helps in keeping the server space empty, allowing more mails to come in.
  • Whereas, if you are using webmail, like mail2web, it will not delete the mails from the server and as more mails come in, your space will get filled up. If the mails exceed the allocated quota or the total web hosting space that you have purchased, you will not be able to receive the emails and will start bouncing, i.e., returning to the sender with the message - "the email account is over quota". So make it a practice that you download your mails at least once in a while to your local Outlook Express or MS Outlook 2003 account.
  • Most Importantly: Always take regular back-up of your mails.
